The Commercial Bank of Ethiopia has reviewed its nine months performance for the fiscal year 2017/18 at Bahir Dar. The bank has mobilized 71.5 billion birr and disbursed 63.7 billion birr fresh loan during the stated period. To provide access to customers, the bank also opened 40 new branches in various parts of the country. Following the opening of the new branches and the implementation of other initiatives as stipulated in the bank’s deposit mobilization strategy, more than 2.1 million customers were recruited during the past 9 months. As stated in the meeting, the targets set to expand access through e-banking services have been successfully met. During the reporting period, it has been possible to dispatch 1.5 million e-cards and register more than 585 thousand mobile banking service subscribers. Moreover, CBE deployed 174 new ATMs and 141 POS terminals to bring the total number of ATMs and POS to 1,676 and 7,382, respectively. Customers have made around 2.2 million mobile banking transactions worth 11 billion birr, it was learnt. The new mobile money service known as CBE Birr has passed the trial period at the just ended quarter. Some 324,723 customers, 2,958 agents, and 1,573 merchants have so far been recruited for the newly launched mobile/agent banking service of the bank. The President, Ato Bekalu Zeleke in his closing remark, commended the staff for the impressive performance. He, nevertheless, noted the need to step up efforts to register better results in the remaining quarter.
